By Anonymous SANTA BARBARA, CA March 21, 2004--“Autism Research and Treatment: A Focus on Families” is the theme for the annual Conference on Autism, hosted jointly by Devereux Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Autism Society of America (ASA).
Scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 1 and 2, 2004 on the Devereux Santa Barbara campus just west of Isla Vista, the Autism Conference is held in conjunction with representatives from the Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (M.I.N.D.) Institute at UC Davis Health Systems in Sacramento. Members of M.I.N.D will be conducting a series of presentations on Autism at the conference to highlight April as National Autism Awareness Month.
According to one of the conference organizers, Marcia Eichelberger of ASA, “It is our hope that this conference will promote increased collaboration among researchers, treatment providers and families.” Tom McCool, Devereux’s Vice President of Development and Government Relations, said, “We also hope that this collaboration can establish systematic communications to provide vital information to public policy decision makers as they deal with the growing numbers of Californians diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.”
Rick Rollens, Association of Regional Center Agencies (ARCA) representative and father of Russell, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, will be opening the conference on April 1 at 2:00 p.m., followed by Jacquelyn McCandless, MD (neurologist, psychiatrist

and author of "Children with Starving Brains"), who will conduct a workshop on Biomedical Interventions for Children with Autism. Following the opening speakers, Eddie Tuduri will be performing with some of his drummers and talking about drum therapy for children with disabilities. Meghan Finn, a singer with Williams Syndrome, will also be performing.
A reception will be held from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, in Jacobs Hall at Devereux. It will provide a forum for conference presenters and participants to meet informally and join community leaders and government representatives who will be presenting proclamations in honor of National Autism Awareness Month to increase awareness of Autism in our community.
On Friday, the conference will begin with a keynote address from a series of speakers including: Dr. Robert Hendren and Dr. Randi Hagerman from the M.I.N.D. Institute; Dr. Ron Huff from the Department of Developmental Services; Lou Vismara, MD, and Rick Rollens, founders of the M.I.N.D. Institute, and Dr. Howard Savin, Vice President of Clinical Services for Devereux.
Presenters in the breakout sessions include some of the most distinguished names in Autism today. Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, Founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), will discuss the CARD protocol; Attorney Christopher Angelo will lecture on insurance rights for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder; and Dr. Ron Huff, Rick Rollens and members of our local Tri-Counties Regional Center will discuss Autism and its impact on the California Developmental Disabilities System.
A conference registration fee of $25.00 covers all costs of the conference including workshops both days, the reception on Thursday, and lunch on Friday.
